Véronique and Didier, French, Canadian and Swiss, travel enthusiasts fell in love with Menorca and Mahón in 2019 and wanted to share their sensitivity to hospitality through this new adventure. The name El Cónsul Maó was obvious to associate the former French consulate and the city of Mahón (Maó in Catalan).

The Boutique Hotel El Cónsul Maó is located in the heart of the historic center of the city of Mahón, in one of the oldest streets of the city, a few meters from the Main Theater, a stone’s throw from the famous fish market (Mercat of the Peices).

El Cónsul Maó is installed in the former French consulate in Menorca, completely renovated and finished in June 2022, while keeping the authentic spirit of the building. The listed facade is unique in Menorca, its patio is bordered by the old wall of Mahon dating from the 16th century. You can find original elements such as the hand-glazed terracotta tiles, the typical Minorcan-style railings and even the original French consulate mast that adorned the facade. The well that supplied the building with rainwater has been renovated and kept for the use of watering and toilets.

The interior decoration project consists of a combination of noble products, such as solid wood, typical cement tiles redone in an artisanal way in Mahon. Natural colors, beiges, oranges, greens are all inspired by nature, which gives a relaxing atmosphere. All rooms are different to give a chic and elegant atmosphere. Refined wallpapers from Anambo, Isidore Leroy or Casamance, natural Italian fabrics and contemporary furniture.

Betting on an eco-responsible hotel: We have chosen eco-responsible tourism. For this we have implemented ecological practices for all services, logistics and maintenance of the establishment.

• Reduce the use of plastic: by removing miniature shampoo bottles, packaging, replacing plastic containers with glass.
• Focus on local products: favoring fruits and vegetables from the region, thus limiting carbon emissions due to transport.
• Bathroom and daily maintenance products for the hotel, ecological and natural.
• Use of rainwater for watering and toilets.
• Water heating by aerothermal energy.
• Sorting of all hotel waste.
